An Indian Civilizational Perspective

Journalists, Iraq and the troubled Mid-East

”World News Tonight” anchor Bob Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt – the two ABC journalists in Iraq are returning home to US today. They were lucky to escape – albeit hurt. Jill Carroll, the independent journalist from Christian Science Monitor, may not be so lucky. She is still in the hands of the terrorists and in fact appeared in a telecast pleading for her life. It was obvious that she was horrified and in trouble.

I was watching the Larry King Live yesterday, and LK said that already 61 journalists have lost their lives! He was also interviewing other journos on their motivations to go into Iraq. The answer was simple “If we dont who will?” I was amazed to see their commitment to their work!

One thing that stood out in that LK program last night was what Christian Amanpour – that regular face on CNN in international assignments – said. She basically lambasted the Bush Government on Iraq. Nothing is moving according to the plan and the place is dangerous as hell! She is about as authoritative a voice in the media that you can get on Iraq.

That is why, it is with amazement, that I watch the drama on Iran unfold. The script looks all too familiar. I am sure there will be sanctions – if not a major conflict. In any case, the world in that area is headed for a showdown. Hamas has already made it as the Palestine governing party. So, I basically see an escalation of the matters there.

Are we looking at a prolonged and even intensive war over in the Middle East with China, Russia, and Europeans taking sides? I think so. It promises to be a shocking or, at the very least, a surprising re-alignment taking shape around the world!!
