An Indian Civilizational Perspective

A Hard Working Iranian and Anti-Illegal Immigration Boycotts.

The morning started early 3 am – got ready and while I was checking my mail waiting for the car service driver … I overshot the time of 4 am as my laptop time was a little off from the main. Last time, the owner of the car service company had sent a new guy – his old friend who had joined him as an employee. This dimunitive balding elderly gentleman is an Iranian – from North Iran – whose family hails from Azherbaijan. He stills has some family there. So, he can speak at least two languages fluently – Turkish and Persian (Farsi). He is an interesting character. Since he is new to the business he is diligent and is always trying to outdo himself. Doublechecks everything and makes sure every small thing is taken of. And in that extra effort seems fairly nervous at times. But he is a good presence to be with.

I was one of the first to enter the Bush Intercontinental airport as a passenger – since they open at 5 am .. and I was right there to get for my plane at 6 am! A chai and a gate change (dont know why they keep changing gates!) I was at my gate watching the CNN’s morning telecast with the O’briens.. today is important is history for the 75th anniversary of the Empire State Building! It was built in 1929 – thats one heck of a long time ago for such a feat!! Well, today hundreds of thousands of Latinos are going to march .. create human chains in NYC.. as well not show up for work .. and not shop to show their clout to the politicians who are sponsoring the Anti-Illegal Immigration bill.. now that’s innovative.. a bill that is against an illegal activity and here are so many folks who are challenging it. As if Illegal Immigration was a birth right!! I had read Samuel Huntington’s article (same guy who wrote on the Clash of Civilization) about how the population in the US will change in the next few decades so that it will be impossible to recognize the demographic landscape a few years from how – specially in Florida, Texas and California. And like today’s protests in Chicago and NYC show – it might be more national in character! So, is the change good or bad? I dont know. I believe any change is for the good! But is Illegal Immigration good or bad? I believe that if there is a law it needs to be followed otherwise there is no incentive for people who follow the law. Soon the discipline in a society goes for a toss!

The difference between the Rich and Poor countries is precisely this – the mandate and the will of the Governments to implement the law and order! In the latter societies, it is easy to circumvent the laws through nepotism, bribery and corruption. Honesty is at a premium and the playing field becomes skewed against the not-so-wealthy and everyone looks to make a quick buck. Innovation happens but on the wrong side of the society – that of breaking the laws!

A society can only progress when a new kid off the block has as much of a chance and opportunity to be the richest man in the world as the current richest bloke on the road! For that, laws create a playing field.
