31 Diamonds Rings Failed to Tempt this NYC Cabbie!

It seems honesty is still alive in this world… if just only in folks at the lower rungs of the economic and social ladder in the US. Its not usual to find someone not tempted by money in today’s US and speaking the truth, given the record of this country’s president and his friends!

Never mind diamonds- a New York cabbie was a Texas girl’s best friend. The driver returned 31 diamond rings he found in his cab after dropping off the passenger, who had left him with a 30-cent tip on a $10.70 fare.

"All my life, I tried to be honest," said Osman Chowdhury, a native of Bangladesh. "Today is no different."

But the 41-year-old cabbie from Queens did have a message: "I’m proud of what I did so that people know New York taxi drivers are honest."

  1. New York cabbies or not, whats the point ??
Integrity and honesty are two different things, one probably means the other. However, the fact is can one quantify the word ?? On a scale of 1 to 10 can one be 9 or 8 or 7 on Honesty and integrity ?

(incidentally most offices have a confidential report for employees where they are graded on a scale of 10 for honesty, integrity and loyalty. My point is either you are or not how can you be in between and if you are lesser than honest I better find someone else!)

Why I ask is because, is it just that someone returned diamond rings that makes him honest ? would I be dishonest if I failed to return a pen ? or if I flicked it from office?

Ones quality or trait for being honest is his integrity, so moral uprightness is paramount, not honesty in the blip of time.

Every quantum of time one has to maintain his traits that would perhaps make such expression speak louder than words.

  2. Parry: you raise an important point… honesty (and so integrity) as a stock concept vs a flow concept!

I agree that one should look at honesty and other related concepts as traits rather than just as acts.. but then such acts as these (of the cabby) seem exemplary.. sort of like a window to his personality itself.
