An Indian Civilizational Perspective

Pakistan Army or Group of Mercenaries?

I never had any doubt that the Pakistani Army was highly unprofessional. But this assertion from a top US diplomat in South Asia regarding the payments being made to the Pak Army and “RENTING” it for US purposes makes the Pakistani Army look more like a group of Mercenaries as opposed to a National fighting group.

The United States is paying around $ 100 million a month for the deployment of 80,000 Pakistani troops on its border with Afghanistan ostensibly for the war on terrorism, a key US official revealed on Thursday.

The money is meant to be “reimbursements” to Pakistan “for stationing troops and moving them around, and gasoline, and bullets, and training and other costs that they incur as part of the war on terror,” US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher, told a Congressional panel.

“That’s a lot of money,” Boucher admitted before the panel about what amounts to a $ 1.2 billion per year reimbursement. “I don’t know if it comes to the whole amount of their expenses, but we support their expenses, yes.”

In all, US aid to Pakistan is now close to $ 2 billion a year, according to figures provided by Boucher, the top U S diplomat for South Asia.

Pakistan Has Quality Army, India Has Quantity, Say Experts

At the end of the day it will still be one man’s willingness to kill another
    London (AFP) May 22, 2002
As the crisis over Kashmir deepens, British military experts say that while India’s armed forces would enjoy a numerical superiority if a war broke out, Pakistan’s army is of higher quality.
Comments by Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee Wednesday that “the time has come for a decisive fight” further fuelled fears of an all-out war with nuclear rival Pakistan over the disputed Kashmir region.

In any long-lasting conflict, India would have the advantage of a stronger economy and a population of over one billion compared to Pakistan’s of about 142 million. It would thus be able to mobilise more soldiers.

But if a conflict was of short duration, these assets would not necessarily enter into the equation, according to William Hopkinson, of the London-based Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA).

“The quality of some of the Pakistani troops is probably better on average than that of the Indians,” he told AFP.

No wonder they were defeated so decisively everytime – and in 1971 with 90,000 Prisoners of Wars!!

In Kargil, the Pakistani Army REFUSED to even accept their own dead soldiers! EVeryone know they were not the terrorists – just Army soldiers in normal clothing (similar to what happened in 1948!).

An army that refuses to collect and take care of its dead and indulges in barbarism – as it did in case of Lt Saurabh Kalia and friends… is in my estimation thoroughly unprofessional and weak in principles!

Btw, the parents of Pakistani soldiers who died in Kargil should thanks Indian Army to have given them a burial by complete Islamic rites.. FAR more than what their own organization could!!

And as far as close encounters are concerned – I have YET to see of any single example of that. Every fight that the Indian Army launched to get the peak was won – ONCE we reached the peak! Until then they could shoot down on the Indian soldiers – but when they were face to face.. WITHOUT the power of Air force and big artillery that you have talked about…. the peaks were vacated and Pakistani soldiers killed WITHIN HOURS!!

So, go check your facts before you make such nonsensical remarks!
