An Indian Civilizational Perspective

Iran Builds Supercomputer From Banned AMD Parts

The disbelief and the reaction in the US totally baffles me and makes me laugh! If someone is smart enough to create a supercomputer from chips picked up from black market.. then more power to them! Ideally AMD should have built one by now… or some pc company. People with brains will do what it takes to make themselves powerful. You cannot blame them for doing so. To sit up and start throwing tantrums – as Bush Administration and other US Governments are wont to do – is highly unproductive!

Virtues and piety is not the preserve of any one nation or people. Same goes for terror.

Iranian scientists claim to have used 216 microprocessors made by Advanced Micro Devices to build the country’s most powerful supercomputer, despite a ban on the export of U.S. computer equipment to the Middle Eastern nation..

Scientists at the Iranian High Performance Computing Research Center at the country’s Amirkabir University of Technology said they used a Linux-cluster architecture in building the system of Opteron processors. The supercomputer has a theoretical peak performance of 860 giga-flops, the posting said. A giga-flop is a billion calculations per second.

Refusing exports of computer equipment is just wrong in the first place. All it does is make people in the blackmarket richer. It does nothing to slow the process down.

I agree. In the 1980’s given the sudden proximity to Pakistan and given India’s friendship to USSR, India was refused all imports of anything that could create a supercomputer. Result: India created a more powerful Supercomputer based on parallel processing.. which had not been done before! Now, India is one of the top 4 or 5 countries in the field of supercomputing.

No one has a monopoly over brains and smarts – so to think that such nonsensical bans and embargoes can do any good is stupid. Oh well.
