An Indian Civilizational Perspective

97 year old gets sentence for "life"!

Getting a life sentence is the second worst thing to death penalty in the crime punishment hierarchy. The idea is that you are restrained for the rest of your life to do anything outside of those four walls. Your crime was grave enough to warrant such harsh treatment but a little less than one that would lead you to death. For most its a befitting to wipe out the entire life for some heinous crime.

Whatever the thinking behind a life sentence punishment, they did not have a 83 year old in mind who would keep contesting the case for 14 years before getting a life sentence at age 97!! This hot-headed old man of 83 ripe years killed his neighbor, Surjit Kaur for a dispute over a vegetable garden! Given the size of properties in Punjab, I wonder how big a “garden” would they have had to warrant killing your neighbor?

When he was given the life sentence, court wanted to make sure it wasn’t giving orders to arrest a dead man.. so it asked the state counsel to check in with him to find out his life status. The State counsel calls the local police station. And our man is found sitting right there! Why? He was inquiring about another case against him! He must be the ripest killer at that age! Kind of like a role model for the inner city gang boys in New York! What the heck was he doing before he went north of 80 years?

Either he is a late bloomer in the world of crime or he is a master at hiding what he has been upto 🙂

I do not know much about Modi. But I enjoyed this. On Desicritic so many called him murderer. Here too they were implying the same. I guess in India they do not believe in the concept of ONE IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.
