An Indian Civilizational Perspective

Food Crisis and Water Shortage is looming on the Planet – Anybody bothered?

My friend, Vish, writes about an issue that not many people are talking about but will – and SHOULD – start discussing in more earnest.

Its called Food Crisis. Coupled with this food crisis is also the crisis of Water shortage. Things are getting worse and worse every year.

Here is what he writes:

Everyone’s noticed the price of wheat flour (atta) and rice in grocery stores here in the US. In India, the food price hike seems even tougher for the middle
and lower class to bear because food costs are such a huge part of the family budget. The govts in India, China and others have limited export of rice and
India is importing wheat again. Some countries are starting to have food riots

Here are some reasons that BBC’s article presents:

-Diversion to produce Ethanol
-Move to more meat consumption than grain consumption in diet of people in China and other rising economies (meat needs much more land and water to be
produced)
-Population growth

Some graphs for a better visual understanding. Look at how the different indicators are moving:

    Dear Desh,

I realized in the early sixties that
    things were going wrong,
and I have done my bit: one child,
    vegetarian, no car.
    Stop discussing, act

    yours,
    Mya
