If good has to be done, it must be done according to the whims of a man! That at least seems to be the motto of the MP State.
In a mass wedding in Shahdol (600 km of Bhopal) held under Mukhyamantri Kanyadaan Yojna (Chief Minister’s ‘giving away the bride’ programme) that began in April 2006 under the auspices of the State Government; all the 151 girls were forced to undergo virginity test, before the wedding.
Its not just the urban girls who will be offended by this, but even the tribal girls did not take this kindly… and rightly so!
“At first I refused to go through the test,” said a Baiga tribal girl, who was among the brides at Shahdol, but who does not want to be identified. “But an officer told me I would not be allowed inside the marriage hall unless the gynaecologist declared me eligible. And the only way I could be eligible was by going through the test.”
“The gynecologist manually examined,” she added.
The administration gave their own reasons for this while ordering an enquiry. Neeraj Dubey, Shahdol’s District Collector explained:
“The test was a precautionary measure,” he added. “Last year one of the brides delivered a baby even as the marriage ceremony was on. Since there is money involved, many women, try to take advantage.”
Obviously a tough situation for both sides.
