An Indian Civilizational Perspective

Mandira's Bedi's EkOmkar Tattoo

mandirabeditattoo.jpgMandira Bedi recently was at a dealers meet of Jaypee Cement at Zirakpur, near Chandigarh, which she attended with Sachin Tendulkar. She was spotted wearing the Ek Omkar tattoo on her back (nape).

Akal Takht, the Sikh Religious body is not happy and wants her to take it off as it hurts Sikh religious sentiments.

Mandira Bedi is rather cheap to use such religious symbols for nothing more than popularity and publicity… she has tried a lot of things including pretty wild photoshoots, so shy bring religious stuff into the mix now?

Oh well…

Getting a tattoo on your body is a private affair, but then certain symbols and inscriptions hold a certain meaning ,a certain sentiment attached to it.India in it’s diversity is very tolerant to religious practices. We have had a tradition to get religious symbols inscribed on our hands i.e at places where they are visible and we can draw the strength it bestows on it’s wearer. But to wear it on the nape is not desirable. To treat a sacred and meaningful symbol as the “Ek Omkar” as an accessory is distasteful. Celebrities owe the people a social responsibility and they can neither take their responsibilities nor the feelings of the people for granted.
