It’s discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Noël Coward, Blithe Spirit
The accused are former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and others. They had organized and were participating in a procession where seditious slogans were raised on the JNU campus in February 2016. After a 3 year probe which was spread across India and where a lot of evidence, videos, audio and other evidence was collected, these charges were filed.
Kapil Sibal, who has regularly defended those who have either tried to manufacture arguments on why the Ram temple should not be constructed or some other anti-social action, now feels that the sedition act should be abolished.
Scrap sedition law (section 124A,IPC) , a colonial hangover
Real sedition is when those in power manipulate institutions , misuse the law , breach peace and security by inciting violence
Punish them in 2019

Awww, how cute is that?
Specially when it comes from a person who had mastered the art of using the Sedition law when he was the Minister of Law and Justice himself!
When he was the minister of law during UPA-2, he not only did not scrap the law, his government used it repeatedly for things as inane as exam paper questions!!
In India the law remains on the books and between 2009 and February 2011, at least 14 journalists, activists, academics and politicians were charged with sedition for speeches, writings and even an exam paper question, according to research on sedition by the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore and the non-governmental organization Alternative Law Forum (ALF). Yes, an exam paper question! The man who was threatened by just a question in the exam paper now feels agitated when some rascals – in a coordinated agenda in connivance with Pakistan’s intelligence – are creating campaigns to shout for breaking of India openly!
Now, that’s bloody rich!!
For the powerful, crimes are those that others commit. Noam Chomsky, Imperial Ambitions: Conversations on the Post-9/11 World
And, not just that, this joker of a man had 8000 sedition cases for – be careful – ONE damn protest! One protest – 8000 sedition cases!
That is the level at which they work! Not just one or two but en masse sedition on an entire crowd! Irrespective of the merits or demerits of the case, the fact remains that use of the sedition law is not particularly a new phenomenon and something that Kapil Sibal was completely innocent of.
Wow. In all the years I have left – on twitter or otherwise, I will NEVER encounter a tweet as eye-opening as THIS. https://t.co/2VVoXlGrlP

Some of the other sedition cases over the UPA years of rule have been:
Aseem Trivedi, September 2012: He was arrested in Mumbai under IPC Section 124 (sedition), section 66 A of Information Technology Act and section 2 of Prevention of Insults to Nation Honour Act. Trivedi was accused of putting up banners mocking the Constitution during aa Anna Hazare rally against corruption and for posting the same on his website.
Simranjeet Singh Mann, June 6, 2005: The Shiromani Akali Dal-Amritsar president was as charged with four different cases of sedition after he raised pro-Khalistan slogans inside the Golden Temple complex on the 21st anniversary of Operation Blue Star.
Sedition is a catch all – and necessary
Yes, sometimes, the sedition law can be misused. But to say the law is just not needed is foolish.
Many times, the smart anarchists and nation breakers, do not pull the trigger themselves. They ensure that an atmosphere of hate and distrust is created and then through ambiguous statement and virtual lies, the punishment can be dodged. They ensure that they have enough explanations and alibis for their actions so their crimes are difficult to prove. That provides them enough of a space to break the society and country.
No one likes to create trouble for himself/herself, so when such so-called activists are working to Break the very society which provided them with the right to dissent – you can be assured that they are so brain-washed that they can be blind to the well being of their own families and their future! The masochism of the activists aside, breaking down of systems and rule of law in a society, with no one in charge can be very dangerous. And whatever grievance may have started as simple activism can become a very large national security risk – putting thousands if not hundreds of thousands of lives in peril!
Because the impact of those practicing sedition with sophisticated narratives to dodge the bullet can unveil and set in motion a suicidal spiral in a society that maybe tough to arrest.
