"Jai Ho" song lyrics with translation

See the choreographer of "Jai Ho" dance showing the moves!

A lot of people on the internet seem to be wandering looking for the English translation of the lyrics of the song JAI HO from the movie SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. So I thought I'd oblige and make some people happy. :-) It also gave a workout to my Spanish.

"Jai Ho" is a victory shout like "Hurray!","Praise be!","It Rocks!". The English translation follows the lines in Hindi below (except Spanish where noted).

Update: At some readers' request, I've included a section at the very bottom that puts the entire English-Spanish part together.

Jai Ho, Jai Ho, Jai Ho, Jai Ho
(IT ROCKS!,IT ROCKS!,IT ROCKS!,OH IT ROCKS!)
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
(COME ON MY LIFE, JOIN ME UNDER THE BIG ROOF)
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale
(COME JOIN ME UNDER THE GLITTERING BLUE SKY)
Jai Ho Jai Ho
(IT ROCKS..OH IT ROCKS!)

Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
(COME ON MY LIFE, JOIN ME UNDER THE BIG ROOF)
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale
(COME JOIN ME UNDER THE GLITTERING BLUE SKY)
Jai Ho Jai Ho
(IT ROCKS..OH IT ROCKS!)
Jai Ho Jai Ho
(IT ROCKS..OH IT ROCKS!)

Ratti Ratti Sachi Maine Jaan Gavayi Hai
(BIT BY BIT I TRULY DIED EACH DAY..)
Nach Nach Koylo Pe Raat Bitayi Hai
(SPENT THE NIGHTS DANCING ON HOT COALS..)
Akhiyon Ki Neend Maine Phoonko Se Uda Di
(I BLEW AWAY THE SLEEP IN MY EYES..)
Gin Gin Tare Maine Ungli Jalayi Hai
(I BURNT MY FINGERS TRYING TO TOUCH THE STARS..)
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
(COME ON MY LIFE, JOIN ME UNDER THE BIG ROOF)
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale
(COME JOIN ME UNDER THE GLITTERING BLUE SKY)
Jai Ho Jai Ho
(IT ROCKS..OH IT ROCKS!)
Jai Ho Jai Ho
(IT ROCKS..OH IT ROCKS!)

[The Spanish part]

Baila! Baila!
(Dance! Dance!)

Ahora conmigo, tu baila para hoy
(Now with me, you dance for today)

Por nuestro dia olvidas,
(For our day, just forget..)

los problemas que sean
(whatever problems there may be)

Salud!
(Cheers!)

Baila! Baila!
(Dance! Dance!)

Jai Ho Jai Ho
(IT ROCKS..OH IT ROCKS!)
Jai Ho Jai Ho
(IT ROCKS..OH IT ROCKS!)
Chakh Le Ho Chakh Le Ye Raat Shahad Hai Chakh Le
(TASTE IT, O TASTE IT, THE NIGHT IS HONEY, TASTE IT)
Rakh Le Haan Dil Hai Dil Aakhri Had Hai Rakh Le
(KEEP MY HEART, IT IS THE LAST LIMIT, YEAH KEEP IT)
Kala Kala, Kajal Tera Koi Kala Jadoo Hai Na
(DARK, THIS EYELINER OF YOURS, IS LIKE A MAGICAL SPELL)

Kala Kala Kajal Tera Koi Kala Jadoo Hai Na
(DARK, THIS EYELINER OF YOURS, IS LIKE A MAGICAL SPELL)

Keh De Ha Keh De Ab Aankh Jhuki Hai.. Keh De
(SAY IT, O SAY IT, NOW THAT YOUR EYES ARE SHOWING IT..SAY IT!)
Aisi Aisi, Roshan Aankhe, Roshan Dono heeray, Hai Kya
(SUCH, AH SUCH LIT-UP EYES (OF YOURS), BRIGHT AS DIAMONDS, AREN'T THEY? )
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
(COME ON MY LIFE, JOIN ME UNDER THE BIG ROOF)
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale
(COME JOIN ME UNDER THE GLITTERING BLUE SKY)
Jai Ho.. Jai Ho
(IT ROCKS!..OH IT ROCKS!)

Baila baila (Spanish)
(Dance! Dance!)
Jai Ho

Baila baila (Spanish)
(Dance! Dance!)
Jai Ho
(IT ROCKS!..)

The main singers of this song are Sukhwinder Singh (male), and Tanvi Shah (female) with additional some part by a third singer named Vijay Prakash.

UPDATE:
Some people requested to have the translation all together (perhaps if they wanted to hum the translation while listening to the song). Here it is with the Spanish part as most English speakers can easily say it:

IT ROCKS!,IT ROCKS!,IT ROCKS!,OH IT ROCKS! (Jai Ho.. Jai Ho)
COME ON MY LIFE, JOIN ME UNDER THE BIG ROOF
COME JOIN ME UNDER THE GLITTERING BLUE SKY
IT ROCKS..OH IT ROCKS! (Jai Ho ..Jai Ho)

Is it possible to have it re-translated in the correct form since there has been so much inconsistent interpretations of the song. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could try again to do it. I really appreciate the first attempt, but I can only imagine that we are all proud lovers of that song, and if it's not updated, then I'm going to think that the Pussycat version is the correct one. ;) I would love it.

jai ho actually means/intended to mean, by the artist; "may you be glorious or may you win" this is what he explains at the oscars on stage.

Hi I am from Syria
I saw the movie last night , it was v.good ,and this song (jai ho) is fascinating.
But was wondering what it meant.
I know that the translation losses some feelings ,but its great to know what it meant.

Again thank u for this translation.

jai ho means may you be glorious or vitory be yours or may you win. ' It rocks' doesn't mean 'jai ho'.
Beware that word for word translation doesn't do justice to the real meaning of the song.

You're welcome, Suhail. Glad to knnow know you liked it.

Prem thinks on and tries to inculcate Vedic teachings in his life and actions. He wants to share these with all.

i agree with Ashish

'it rocks' doesn't really give the same feeling as the word Jai Ho does to me....and doesn't really go with the rest of the lyrics or give the song justice, too childish in a way. But I do understand why you wrote it like that, the rest is a very good job...keep up the good work!!!

This song is intoxicating. I could listen to it all day.

What is the female saying that sounds like "sha bay dum"?

Thanks for posting.

You rock!

I feel those lines are in Urdu language and are as follows

shab-e-gham
(night of sorrow)

gum-e-dil
(heart filled with sorrow)

haal-e-dil
(state or condition of heart)

Hope this helps.

--Kailash.

Rahman,

You put the whole Tamil audience into ecstacy when you said in Oscar stage 'Ella puga-zhum Iraivanuke' (All fame be unto God).
You have made every single Tamil person in the world worthy and proud of himself/herself by constantly giving very high quality music. Only you or Ilayaraja can do it !!!

When we are a bit frustrated with everyday life, your music has taken us to a different level, that allows us to attract what we wanted.

Cheers and Long Life to the Genius.

Great job, Prem! Such unusual lyrics from Gulzar - very unlike his usual gems! I wonder if you could also translate what the female singer says after Jai Ho, after the 1st and 3rd antaras?

Hello,
Jai ho derives from the name Vijay, which means victory.
In the old days according to my mum people would say vijay instead of jai ho. The speakers of Hindi/Sanskrit shortened the expression as it was easier to say Jai ho.

Sabiendo el significado de la letra de la canción resulta todavía más espectacular el final de la película con el baile.

Thanks 4 the Spanish translation. One small correction 4 the Hindi one. u r confusing raat with ratti. Raat means night but ratti-ratti mean little by little. So basically it means I have died a little every day, it's true or I've died a small death every day.

My Punjabi background probably affected my hearing somewhat because the songwriter uses several punjabi-flavored words: he used the word 'Jind' which is very common in Punjabi ("jind meriye"), and he says 'nuch nuch' Punjabi style rather than 'naach naach'. 'Raatti' in Punjabi means 'at night'. But now that I hear it again, it seems you're right that double use of 'ratti' as in 'Ratti Ratti' would be better translated as 'little by little' than night after night. The Punjabi version would probably have a longer 'aa' sound more like 'raatti' instead of 'ratti'. I've made the correction. Thanks!

I might even take you up on your offer (no puedo decir este en espanol).

Nice effort put in.... im so happy to see the translation.

Thanks for the lyrics. I am still confused about the title as the cast appeared in an interview on Oprah and were asked what "Jai Ho" means. A completely different translation was given. Unfortunately, I can't remember what that translation was.

Jai's literal translation is "Victory" and Ho's literal translation is "be". So in that sense, the absolute literal translation will be "(May)Victory be". However, one also addresses his God or an elder with the word "Jai" - where it is used as a mark of respect.. where it takes on a meaning "My Respect (or Regards)".

In that sense, Jai has come to be associated with a feeling of exultation - rejoicing a good time or victory.

Hope that helps..

Since you are capturing the flavor of the song rather than the literal translation, the lead line may be better translated as "Let it rock" rather than it rocks.

Thanks for the terrific translation!

Neele Neele Tare Maine Ungli Jalayi Hai
(I BURNT MY FINGERS TRYING TO TOUCH THE STARS..)

Its not neele neela......but gin gin, which means to I have burnt my fingers counting the stars all night. (goes for poor people who dream big)

Thanks Daleep, I've made the change in Hindi you pointed out. The English translation of that line still makes sense (I'm choosing not to make it literal, lest people ask how could counting cause burns :-)).

hola ..what a great song and a great movie thanks for the effort

I was so sure there was Spanish in there! Any idea why?

My guess is that it was Rahman's (the composer's) idea of experimentation and making parts of it sound exotic - Spanish is exotic to listeners based in India[*] (Keep 'em guessing). Rahman has a huge following in India and whether or not the song/movie got a wide audience in the rest of the world, his music would surely have gotten it in India - so I think he did it with an eye to his Indian listeners. Even the Hindi is kind of tweaked: 'ratti ratti' and 'jind' are kind of 'slangish'/punjabi-sourced, compared to what people use in normal Hindi conversation.

He has tended to create blended-language 'motifs' before: dropping in Tamilian refrains/choruses in his Hindi songs for example. They were pretty successful in having the same effect.

[*]Some might argue that Spanish phrases could sound chic for American audiences too (as seen in the Terminator's 'hasta la vista').

Hola Prem,

Nice work!

I could not find any mistakes in the song translation - neither in English nor in Spanish!

Saludos!
- Ashish

Prem,

May be you'd want to consider changing 'It Rocks' to 'Victory' or 'Triumph' as the exact meaning of 'Jai Ho'. 'It Rocks' does not convey the meaning of 'Jai Ho' exactly and entirely.

Keep up the good work!

Ashish

I agree with you for most part, Ashish. 'Be Victorious' and 'Praise be' were compelling choices I considered. I wanted to make sure the Jai Ho refrain didn't sound like a slogan if translated literally and I was wondering whether it would fit with the rest of the lyrics and in a dance number. So I tried to capture the mood rather than the literal translation. Then again, I was mainly doing this for the non-Hindi/Urdu aware as the Hindi/Urdu speakers know better and wouldn't need the translation. I appreciate your kind feedback.

Prem thinks on and tries to inculcate Vedic teachings in his life and actions. He wants to share these with all.

May I make a suggestion? I don't know Hindi (or most foreign languages, either!), but I do know English. When Mr. Rahman won the Oscar for this song, he did say it translated as "victory" which is such a great word for the whole film and its Cinderella story.

I think that as far as cadence and flow (in English) are concerned, perhaps a compromise phrase to use would be "at last!" It would certainly convey the whole impression of happiness and how destiny is determined.

I've already seen the movie twice, and will pick up the DVD when it comes out. A friend runs an "art movie" theatre, and shows many critically acclaimed Indian films, but I told him that SM really has a worldwide appeal, and that right now, with the state our country is in, a triumphant ending was needed.

The poetry of the lines in Hindi is heard immediately, and this song is so uplifting. Thank you for the translation--to understand it in its native language would be wonderful, as often English doesn't do other languages justice!

Hi Prem,

Thanks for your response. I agree with you from your viewpoint. I didn't mean to find faults with your fine work; I just thought I'd let my 'drishtikone' known to viewers as I believe this site is all about perspectives. :-)

Keep it up!

Jai ho! :-)

Regards,
Ashish

Thanks----I was all over the internet trying to just translate jai ho. You solved it, and it makes sense.

how did you get the translation?
do you speak this language or how?
Thanks :)
