Laptops outsell Desktops for the first time

Laptop has become the way to do computing for most people now.  Specifically with its mobility factor and the, now, ubiquitous wi-fi + broadband facilities in almost every house (most of the homes I visited in India have wi-fi + broadband – in fact MTNL’s broadband router also has a wireless router built-in), laptops are becoming more visible.  Last quarter the notebook shipments rose by 40%.

In fact this is the first time when the Laptop sales have outstripped Desktop sales – 38.6 million to 38.5 million.  HP has the highest laptop sales with 18.8% share and Dell has 13.9% share with Acer at the 3rd position at 12.2.[1]
Companies are experimenting with more powered machines and also at the lower end netboooks (Acer).  These days one can find all sorts of deals in the papers – specially during the school opening.  In fact in the last 2 years I have bought at least 3 laptops for family members in India, where such deals are still a rarity.  So, when I take a $400 laptop to India they like getting something that is Rs 20,000 (which normally may cost well over Rs 40k).

In the coming months, while the notebooks shipments may see 13% rise, the desktops may have around 3.8% growth.  The picture seems rosy for the laptop market going forward from here.
