Population is Increasing and so is Inflation in India

For a country where 800 million live in poverty and penury, India has a rather large of human beings to develop.  In the recent census, we came to know that India’s borders now have 1.21 billion people somehow surviving in it.  Some of the statistics related to this figure are shocking.

  • India’s population now 17% of world total
  • India’s population equals US + Indonesia + Brazil + Japan + Bangladesh + Pakistan (as per Indian Census Commissioner C. Chandramouli)
  • In the last 10 years, India added 181 million people to its population (more than Pakistan’s total population of 170 million)
  • Child Sex ratio has gone worse – from 927 girls per 1000 boys to 914 girls per 1000 boys – which means female feticide and infanticide is rampant!

The situation of those who live in India is not exactly hundry-dory.  Despite the close to 10% of growth in economy, India has 13% inflation, one of the highest rates in the world.  What is scary for the Indian middle is that half of that inflation comes from higher food prices which squeezes families who spend one of every four Rupees earned on food.  For those who are below the poverty, life is even tougher!   Some poor actually eat grass to survive!

It is instructive to know the difference between how one unit of currency is spent in other countries by the people.  Even Chinese have it much better!
