AP Congress Chief: “Just because India achieved freedom at midnight does not mean that women can venture out after dark”

Just when you think you have heard it all in terms of complete insensitivity of the powers-that-be; someone from the establishment comes out with something that leaves you flabbergasted with the response.  Here AP Congress Chief comes up with the most asinine comment on the Delhi gangrape incident.

While his party bosses in the national capital have been nearly pulverized by raging protests against the gang-rape of a Delhi girl, Andhra Pradesh Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana on Monday opened his mouth to put his foot right in, saying women are asking for trouble if they venture out at night. Worse, he described the assault on the physiotherapy student as a “minor incident” for which party president Sonia Gandhi had reached out to agitating people.
“Just because India achieved freedom at midnight does not mean that women can venture out after dark. They should ensure that they do not board buses with few passengers,” Botsa said to the shock of reporters at a press conference at Congress headquarters here. (link)

It is easy for someone who goes around in chauffeur-driven cars that girls shouldn’t board buses with few passengers at night, but many… MANY middle class girls are dependent on public transport and HAVE to board some thinly populated vehicles at the late hours.  If we cannot create enough law enforcement and deterence for common people to go about easily and safely, then this Government should just say so and get the heck out of the power!!
