Dr. Abdul Kalam to join IIM-Shillong as Visiting Faculty

Ex-President, APJ Abdul Kalam is taking on a new assignment.  He is going to teach a course at the Indian Institute of Management-Shillong.  It is titled “Societal transformation bio-technology and its application“.  His lectures will start in July to a class of 110.

This IIM, the first one in North East works out of a makeshift facility – which is now the Mayurbhanj Complex – summer palace residence of erstwhile ruler of Mayurbhanj.    Meanwhile Meghalaya government has allotted a 120-acre plot to construct a state-of-the-art academic-cum-residential campus.

Dr. Kalam was in Shillong to inaugurate SUSCON, the third annual international sustainability conference of IIM Shillong, and delivered his address on PURA (Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas), a sustainable development system.

On that occasion he said:

“India’s core competencies majorly lie in the sectors of agriculture and food processing, education and healthcare, information and communication technology, reliable and quality electric power, surface transport and infrastructure for all parts of the country and self-reliance in critical technologies.
“If these five areas progress in a coordinated way, it will lead to food, economic and national security and help in achieving energy independence,”
