How long did this fish come!

Environment

I got this story in an email from a friend. He is an avid boating and fishing enthusiast and likes to visit this forum started by the manufacturer of his boat. I found it fascinating that this fish could make its way across the Atlantic and was found two and a half years later on the American East coast.. all the way from Spain! Amazing!

Well the 42" bluefin I caught on March 18th, 2007 had a tag in it. The fish was tagged on November 13th, 2004 in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain. There were 855 days between catches and 3,850 miles. The fish was first measured at 26". It was tagged by Ortiz de Urbina for the Institute Espanol de Oceanografia. There was no data for age or sex. I’d like to know how many miles it put on in that 2 and 1/3 years. From my understanding, not many tagged fish are recaptured let alone recaptured across the ocean from where it was tagged.

The Smell of the New Car – expensive and dangerous!

Environment

One of my friends had told me once – The Most expensive perfume in the world is that of a New Car! Because as soon as you drive out of the showroom, the price of the car has fallen precipitously!

Well, it turns out that the smell of the new car is not only the most expensive, but it is the most dangerous as well! Here is what the study says:

That "new car smell" can be hazardous to your health, The Ecology Center, a Berkeley, Calif., environmental group said.
The Ecology Center said toxic chemicals such as bromine, chlorine and lead found in cars’ interiors give off harmful fumes for three years, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The group listed the 10 least toxic vehicles in a report: the Acura RDX; BMW X3; Chevrolet Cobalt; Chrysler PT Cruiser; Honda Odyssey; Nissan Frontier; Suzuki Aerio wagon; Toyota Matrix; and Volvo S40 and V50.

The 10 worst vehicles were: the Chevy Aveo, Express and Silverado; Hyundai Accent; Kio Rio and Spectra; Nissan Versa; Scion xB; Subaru Forester; and Suzuki Forenza.

Jeff Gearhart of the Ecology Center said consumers can avoid the fumes, which are emitted when the car’s interior is exposed to heat.

The AirCar.. Coming to India soon!!

Environment, India • 2 Comments

Tata’s don’t take their things lightly.. when they get in any area or industry.. they do a thorough job of it. Not many had predicted the rise of Tata Motors.. but it did do very well. Now Tata Motors is looking at this car which runs on compressed air. The chances are that this is not as outlandish as it may seem. Specially on the Indian city roads where the max speeds touch 60-70 kmph. I guess the average is around 20 kmph. So, for such cases this is a viable option. the price though looks a little more.. but when the fuel price is factored in – Rs 90 a fill.. it takes the sting out of one’s budget!! If the Govt can give some tax breaks too because it is non-polluting.. then it would make this deal even sweeter!!

Delhi's Common-Property Sewer called Yamuna!!

Environment, India

just read this and you will understand the mockery of the situation that is India!

Almost 40-50% of Delhi’s sewage is drained into Yamuna UNTREATED!!

While Delhi creates – by a rough.. unknown.. and uneducated guess – somewhere over 2900 million litres of sewage a day… Capacity Utilization for Narela and Ghittorni plants are either ZERO or close to zero!! The result is that Yamuna is used as a dump and it has become THE city’s sewage!! Only under half of Delhi’s sewage gets treated!

Honestly, the urban sewage system during Harrappa was better than today’s Delhi.. and that was 5000 YEARS BACK!! I wonder when we Delhi-ites will look beyond our drawing rooms to realize that we are putting the stomachs and, indeed, lives of our kids and grand-kids in CRITICAL DANGER!!

Exxon Finally Acknowledges Global Warming!

Business, Environment, Global Warming

Even the Big E (Exxon) has changed its stance on Global Warming now. It has decided to no longer live under the pretense as if nothing is happening! It was the only and the Biggest one of the Oil & gas to be thinking on green stuff.. but better late then never!

Big Oil behemoth Exxon Mobil Corp. has dropped any pretense of questioning whether global warming is real. Now the company is seeking to position itself as an active player in efforts to lower greenhouse gases.

"The appropriate debate isn’t on whether climate is changing, but rather should be on what we should be doing about it," Kenneth Cohen, Exxon’s vice president of public affairs, told reporters on a conference call Thursday.
